What's behind the Idea?
There is a growing demand for living space that allows for sustainable, socially connected and cost-efficient lifestyles that meet the needs of different generations.
For example, there is a growing reluctance among the senior population, even in rural areas, to move into a nursing home, while the younger generation is looking for a living area with comfort and service.
The solution in urban areas

In large cities, “assisted living” has become increasingly popular as a form of all-day care and younger people often have the option of having meals and groceries delivered to their homes, a service that is rarely offered in rural areas.
In the cities, senior citizens in particular rent a flat for a fixed price and are provided with housekeeping and outpatient care by affiliated organisations. They can also easily take advantage of additional services such as domestic and manual support/care or visits to the authorities.
For the younger generation, who love comfort and can afford it, there are serviced flats, often attached to hotels, which provide cleaning and service.
Although the high rents in these facilities usually make it possible to realise such forms of living in large cities, they are hardly available or feasible in rural areas for financial reasons.
The (additional) problem of care in rural areas

...is complex and is influenced by various factors.
Some of the challenges are:
-
Demographic change: Many rural areas are facing major demographic changes, characterized by an aging population and an out-migration of young people. This leads to a greater need for nursing and care services.
-
Infrastructure: In rural areas, infrastructure for health and social services, as well as restaurants and delivery services, may be limited. There is often a lack of adequate transportation to get to medical facilities and distances to care facilities can be great. Restaurants are also often too far away to make a delivery service profitable.
-
Shortage of skilled workers: The lack of qualified nursing staff is a serious problem in many parts of Germany. This is particularly true in rural areas, where it can be more difficult to attract and retain skilled workers.
-
Social isolation:In remote rural areas there is an increased risk of social isolation, particularly among older people. The limited mobility and lack of social amenities can lead to a lack of social interactions.
-
Financial resources: Rural communities may have limited financial resources to provide adequate care and support services. This can impact the quality of care and limit access to essential services.
